About this Event

Performance: 35 min
Closing + Q&A: 20 min
Approximate total run time: 60 minutes
Maiko Kikuchi's Pink Bunny is an exploration of daydreams brought to life. Using puppetry, animation, and visual storytelling, Kikuchi crafts an otherworldly performance that dives deep into the recesses of the subconscious. Drawing on her upbringing in Japan as the daughter of a psychoanalyst, she creates a vivid, dreamlike universe where the boundaries between fantasy and reality blur.
This series of live performances, Pink Bunny (2024), is a modern reprisal of her show of the same name a decade after its debut (2014) and will run in conjunction with her exhibition, on view at NowHere from October 24 - November 24.
Kikuchi's artistic journey began in Japan, where her interest in the liminal space between dreams and waking reality was cultivated. As the daughter of a psychoanalyst, Kikuchi grew up deeply understanding the unconscious mind and its influence on creativity. This unique upbringing shaped her approach to art, leading her to incorporate dream logic and archetypal imagery into her work. After earning her B.A. in Theater Arts and Fashion Design from Musashino Art University, she expanded her practice through a Master's in Sculpture at Pratt Institute, blending multiple art forms to give her visions life.
Her body of work spans a variety of mediums, from solo puppet performances like Daydream Anthology and No Need for a Night Light on a Light Night Like Tonight to large-scale collaborations such as 9000 Paper Balloons, presented at Japan Society in 2022.
Kikuchi's ability to cross boundaries between fine art, theatre, and animation has garnered her widespread acclaim, making her one of the city's most distinctive voices in contemporary puppetry and performance art.
