About this Event
In this panel event, established writers, including CCI lecturers Dr Tom Sykes and Dr Amanda Garrie and PhD candidate Sudip Sen, will discuss how they present ethnicity in their creative writing and performance work in a respectful, accurate and ethical fashion, in addition to offering theoretical insights the panel will provide practical advice for what Edward Said called the "non-manipulative, non-oppressive" writing of the Other.
Sykes is the author of seven books including the memoir The Years of Travelling Anxiously, which delves into his Jewish immigrant ancestry, and the novel Tangled Saviours, which critiques Orientalism and Western imperialism in the Southeast Asian context.
Amanda Garrie's fiction and poetry grapples with her Romani heritage, and her novel Fluvial looks into the post Yugoslavia Serb Croat situation and inherent folklore.
Sudip Sen's research proposes creative methods for interrogating the phenomenon of "not racism" in public discourses.
This event is part of the University of Portsmouth's One World Festival.
