About this Event

DEMBIS THIOUNG presents "PENCHMI African Drum + Dance Portal - Spring Series" in collaboration with FOLKLORE CHARITY.

Dembis Thioung invites you on a journey to ancient West Africa to learn and embody traditional rhythms, activate collective remembrance and manifest ancestral desires for peace and freedom, celebrating togetherness and honoring unity in diversity. As Bayefall, Dembis welcomes people from all backgrounds and spreads the important message of tolerance, acceptance, and love for all humanity.

The word PENCHMI (in Wolof is written as “Penccmi”) is used to describe the gathering of ancestors, transcending time and space, to discuss matters of LIFE, FREEDOM, and PEACE. Most importantly, it serves to remind us of the LOVE and RESPECT shared among each other.

This spring, we invite you all to three PENCHMI drum + dance portals in Folklore Hoxton in 186 Hackney Road, London.

Come prepared to drum, dance, and joyfully sweat, allowing your spirit to soar high by connecting through ancestral rhythms, songs, and African wisdom channeled by Dembis Thioung.

Dembis takes pride in being guided by the highest Senegalese value of "TERANGA": welcoming, sharing and supporting each other in happiness always, valuing wealth not for its quantity but for the generosity extended to others. "TERANGA" represents the essence of Senegalese culture and it can be translated with the word hospitality.

DEMBIS THIOUNG

Dembis is a mesmerizing master of the dunduns—the melodic and hypnotic bass drums that constitute the heartbeat, melody, and soul of traditional West African ensemble djembe music.

A Bayefall at heart and Griot by blood, Dembis was born and raised in Dakar, West Africa he is now based in London, UK. Introduced to traditional and contemporary Senegalese music at a young age, he learned the art of drumming and dance.

Recognized as a skilled percussionist specializing in Dundun, Djembe, Sabar, and Asico drums, Dembis proudly identifies with his Senegalese legacy, carrying forward the teachings of his elders and ancestry.

LUZMIRA ZERPA

Luzmira Zerpa is a prolific Venezuelan singer/songwriter based in UK who has collaborated with the likes of Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra), Orlando Julius and Mulatu Astatke, and played everywhere from the Royal Festival Hall to the Roundhouse, Glastonbury to the World Music Festival in Udaipur, India, performing alongside the likes of Manu Chao and the Buena Vista Social Club.

Luzmira’s music blends traditional, folkloric music from Latin America with international influences that come from her 15+ years involvement in the alternative London music scene, and her latest journey is her most personal yet: an exploration of the music she grew up with in Venezuela, reimagined for the 21st century which she will be releasing as her debut solo record in late 2024 in partnership with the Mais Um label. On the album she interprets songs she learnt as a child from her home region of Venezuela and adds some her improvisations pertinent to style of folkloric music. Refracted through a London lens as these folk songs fuse with other styles of Latin and African music, electronic and psychedelic sounds.
