Prior to the 2024 US presidential election, Donald Trump made waves in Taiwan when he suggested that “Taiwan should pay [the US] for defense.” BBC reports that Google searches for the phrase “impact of Trump being elected” (川普當選影響) increased by 1000% in Taiwan on November 5. Since confirmation of Trump’s re-election, many analysts have weighed in on what his second era of presidency would mean for US-Taiwan-China relations. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs itself has warned that China could potentially test the US during the presidential transition through increased drills, cyber-attacks, or other forms of psychological warfare.
