On March 2, 2026, I turn 56.These two photos are my before and after preview of something I never thought I would volunteer for. On March 21, 2026, at the St. Baldrick’s event, Bald for a Cause, at The Mason Jar Lager Company in Fuquay Varina, my friend Kellie L. Bradley and I plan to let someone shave our heads, provided we hit our fundraising target.
Every year Facebook asks, “Which charity do you want people to donate to?” I usually nominate something worthy and keep supporting the causes I already back. But this time, something stopped me.
I started reading the St. Baldrick’s updates about the children. Their names, their treatments, their courage, and sometimes the hardest words of all, that a child has passed away. It hit me like a wave.
Turning 56 is a privilege. I have lived a full life, with joy, reinvention, and some very hard chapters too. Like many people, I have carried experiences I would never wish on anyone. But it all looks different when you think about children and families facing cancer.
This is not about vanity, although I will admit the idea of being bald is not my favourite. It is about turning gratitude into action, and using a moment of discomfort to help fund research and support for kids with cancer.
My original goal was $500. I would love us to push past $1,000 and make this count.
