Celebrated around the world, May Day (or International Workers Day) commemorates the May 1st, 1886, Chicago general strike and “Haymarket Affair” which led to the creation of the 8-hour workday. In 2006, Oakland Sin Fronteras began marking the holiday with an annual Oakland march for immigrant workers and immigrant rights.
Join us at La Peña after the Oakland Sin Fronteras International Workers’ Day March & Resource Fair, beginning at 2:00 pm at Fruitvale BART Plaza in Oakland.

Featuring
- Headliner Bambu is a militant, community organizer, father, and rapper from Los Angeles who resides in Oakland. He’ll be performing selections from his album and more.
- Boots Riley is a writer and director of the brand new film I Love Boosters, who made his name as a community organizer in Oakland and as a rapper with The Coup. Boots joins us to celebrate his father Walter’s 82nd birthday.
- Walter Riley is a lifelong civil rights activist and labor organizer, formerly leading the Progressive Labor Party’s workplace organizing efforts in the Bay Area, Chicago and Detroit in the 1970s, before becoming a legendary Oakland-based civil rights lawyer. Walter’s birthday is on May Day!
