About this Event
Parols for Palestine: A Filipino Parol Workshop Fundraiser for Palestinian Mutual Aid
Learn how to make a parol, a traditional Filipino Christmas lantern with artist Maria Patricia Abuel. The workshop will include all materials for you to create your own beautiful parol to light up your home. You can customize your parol by choosing different colours and designs including the Palestinian flag colours and adorning it in symbols such as the fishnet, olive leaves, and poppies.
Significance and Solidarity
The parol is a traditional Filipino Christmas lantern and represents the Star of Bethlehem - which is a city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank of Palestine. If Jesus were born during these times, he would be born during a genocide. The parol is a Filipino cultural icon that embodies faith, hope, and celebration with its light guiding the way and may it remind us that we must continue to light a path for resistance and revolution from the Philippines to Palestine.

Pasko, or Christmas, holds a deeply cherished place in Filipino culture, celebrated as a time of joy, community, and giving, often lasting months in anticipation and festivity. Yet, as we honor this tradition, we cannot ignore the injustices and genocides happening around the world. This event stands as a testament to our culture's spirit of solidarity, dedicating the season to uplift the calls of the Palestinian people and their struggle for liberation.
