The ceremony is reinvented in the heart of the playground that will become the athletes' playground the very next day, the City of Light, for the biggest popular sports festival in the heart of Paris.
The Olympic Seine
The opening ceremony of Paris 2024 marks a break with previous editions of the Games.
On July 26, 2024, a bold, original and unique ceremony will mark the Olympic history of great firsts.
An off-stadium ceremony
For the first time in the history of the Olympic Summer Games, a ceremony will take place outside the stadium.
The city will become the living backdrop for an exceptional moment, with the various tableaux of a performance showcasing the monuments, bridges and cultural establishments lining the Seine.
A ceremony on a river
The parade will take place on boats dedicated to the national delegations, equipped with cameras to enable viewers to get as close as possible to the athletes.
Sailing from East to West across Paris, the 10,500 athletes will stroll through the playing field, which will magnify their performances over the course of sixteen days. Six kilometers long, the journey will end in front of the Trocadéro, where the final shows and ceremonies will take place.
A ceremony by and for the athletes
The athletes will be at the heart of the show. By placing the parade of delegations at the opening, Paris 2024 is breaking with traditional codes. From the introduction, then throughout the ceremony, they will be mixed in with the artistic performances, illustrating Paris 2024's desire to stage Games for and by the athletes.
The flow
The river show will follow the course of the Seine, from East to West over 6km. It will depart from the Pont d'Austerlitz, in front of the Jardin des Plantes, skirting the two Parisian islands of Ile Saint Louis and Ile de la Cité, and passing under eight to ten bridges and footbridges, the scene of the shows that will punctuate the route.
Aboard their boats, the athletes will catch a glimpse of some of the official sites of the Games, such as the Place de la Concorde, the Invalides esplanade, the Grand Palais, and finally the Pont d'Iéna, where the walk will end in front of the Trocadéro and its official grandstand for a grand finale of protocol and extravaganza.

Une cérémonie hors stade
Pour la première fois des Jeux Olympiques d’été, une cérémonie se déroulera hors stade.
La ville deviendra le décor vivant d‘un moment d’exception, les différents tableaux d’un spectacle total mettront en scène les monuments, ponts et établissements culturels qui bordent la Seine.
Une cérémonie sur un fleuve
Le défilé prendra place sur des embarcations dédiées aux délégations nationales, équipées de caméra pour permettre aux téléspectateurs d’être au plus près des athlètes.
Naviguant d’est en ouest à travers Paris, les 10 500 athlètes déambuleront au milieu du terrain de jeu qui magnifiera leurs prestations pendant seize jours. Longue de six kilomètres, la traversée s’achèvera devant le Trocadéro, où le final des spectacles et des cérémonies protocolaires prendra place.
Une cérémonie par et pour les athlètes
Les athlètes seront au cœur du spectacle. En plaçant le défilé des délégations en ouverture, Paris 2024 casse les codes traditionnels. Dès l’introduction, puis tout au long de la cérémonie, ils seront mêlés aux performances artistiques, illustrant la volonté de Paris 2024 de réaliser des Jeux pour et par les athlètes.
Le spectacle fluvial suivra le cours de la Seine, d’est en ouest sur 6km. Il prendra départ du pont d’Austerlitz, devant le Jardin des Plantes, contournera les deux îles parisiennes de l’île Saint Louis et de la Cité, passera sous huit à dix ponts et passerelles, théâtre des spectacles qui jalonneront le parcours.
A bord de leurs embarcations, les athlètes apercevront certains des sites officiels des Jeux tels que la place de la Concorde, l’esplanade des Invalides, le Grand Palais, et enfin le pont d’Iéna où la déambulation s’achèvera devant le Trocadéro et sa tribune officielle pour un grand final entre protocole et spectacle.
