About this Event
Make a a Mask with us!
This immersive, hands-on workshop invites participants of all ages and skill levels to explore the expressive and sculptural possibilities of papier-mâché through the creation of decorative and wearable masks. Guided by paper artist Shelley Mouber, attendees will learn foundational construction techniques, surface development, and finishing processes while developing a personalized mask design.
The session emphasizes accessibility, creativity, and experimentation. Instructions are structured in clear, incremental phases so that beginners feel supported while more experienced participants have space to expand conceptually and technically.
Participants will be introduced to essential papier-mâché techniques, including armature construction, layering methods, sculptural shaping, and surface finishing. Emphasis will be placed on both structural integrity and artistic expression, ensuring each mask is durable as well as visually compelling.
All materials are provided, including paper, adhesives, sculpting supports, paints, brushes, and decorative elements. Participants are also welcome to bring lightweight personal embellishments if they wish to further customize their work.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with a completed decorative and/or wearable papier-mâché mask—an original objet d’art that reflects their individual creative vision. In addition to a finished piece, participants will gain practical knowledge of paper sculpture techniques that can be applied to future artistic projects.
This workshop cultivates community engagement, hands-on creativity, and confidence in working with accessible, sustainable materials in an inspiring setting at Mount Sequoyah.
