This hands on Gynecologic Skills Day provides focused training in essential reproductive health assessment and Pap smear collection commonly used in community midwifery. This is designed for midwifery students who want to build confidence performing pelvic exams and cervical cancer screening in a respectful, trauma informed clinical setting.During this skills session we will review female pelvic anatomy, Pap smear collection technique, and routine cervical cancer screening practices. Participants will also discuss sexually transmitted infections (STIs), common vaginal infections, and basic approaches to screening and recognizing symptoms of conditions such as yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis.
Participants will learn:
• Pelvic anatomy and reproductive health assessment
• Proper Pap smear collection technique
• Cervical cancer screening guidelines
• Understanding Pap smear results and common follow up recommendations
• Overview of sexually transmitted infections and screening practices
• Recognition of common vaginal infections
• Trauma-informed and respectful gynecologic care
This is a hands on, participation based skills session. Participants will practice Pap smear collection using clinical simulators and peer participation to help develop comfort and competency with the procedure. Volunteer participation is encouraged to help create a realistic learning environment.
All skills practice is taught and supervised by a Licensed Midwife (LM), Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), and NARM Preceptor.
PEP students: If you are completing the NARM PEP pathway, please bring your NARM skills verification paperwork if you would like skills evaluated and signed during the session.
Participants who would like their Pap smear specimen sent to the laboratory for evaluation may use private insurance or choose and additional cash pay $60 for lab processing.
This skills day is intended to provide practical clinical experience in a supportive learning environment while emphasizing professionalism, consent, and respectful client centered care. Cost $40 pre-registration is required.
