Der lange Schatten

The trio, established in summer 2009 and based in Berlin, is a collective project exploring improvisation through original compositions brought by each of the musicians involved. Piano, reed and string instrument is a line-up deeply rooted in chamber's music tradition, "transparent" and yet capable of shaping a strong counterpoint, either of melodic lines or abstract soundscapes.
The group released two records so far, in 2014 the first selftitled CD, and in 2018 Concurrences on Trouble in the East Records, further recordings were done for the german radio station SWR. They played concerts all over Europe, amongst others at Umlaut Festival/Paris, Vinterjazz Festival/Copenhagen, Ring Ring Festival/Belgrad and toured the USA for Goethe Institut.
In september 2025 the trio recorded a new record that will be released in next autumn, the concert at Panda will feature material from this upcoming release.

Das Trio, im Sommer 2009 gegründet und in Berlin beheimatet, ist ein kollektives Projekt, das sich der Improvisation auf der Grundlage von Eigenkompositionen widmet, die von jedem der beteiligten Musiker eingebracht werden.
Die Besetzung aus Klavier, Blasinstrument und Streichinstrument ist tief in der Kammermusiktradition verwurzelt – „transparent" und dennoch fähig, einen starken Kontrapunkt zu formen, sei es durch melodische Linien oder abstrakte Klanglandschaften.
Bislang hat die Gruppe zwei Alben veröffentlicht: 2014 die erste, selbstbetitelte CD und 2018 das Album Concurrences beim Label Trouble in the East Records; zudem entstanden weitere Aufnahmen für den deutschen Radiosender SWR. Sie gaben Konzerte in ganz Europa – unter anderem beim Umlaut Festival in Paris, beim Vinterjazz Festival in Kopenhagen und beim Ring Ring Festival in Belgrad – und tourten im Auftrag des Goethe-Instituts durch die USA.
Im September 2025 nahm das Trio ein neues Album auf, das im kommenden Herbst erscheinen wird; das Konzert im Panda präsentiert Material aus dieser bevorstehenden Veröffentlichung.

Antonio Borghini (1977)
Double bass player and composer. Studied classical music at G.B.Martini conservatory in Bologna. From the late 90's on he's been playing with several of the most important Italian Ensembles and players in creative music (Collettivo Bassesfere, Orange room, Eco d'alberi, Small Talk, Gianni Gebbia, Luca Venitucci a.o.) and in jazz (Stefano Bollani, Cristina Zavalloni, Gianluca Petrella, Aldo Romano a.o.).
Since 2003 he plays with cellist Tristan Honsinger in various projects (Hook line and sinker, Seven seas orchestra, Small Talk). From 2004 till 2006 he founds the Domino quartet with Sean Bergin, Gianluca Petrella and Hamid Drake, plays concerts with David Murray and Hamid Drake, he's member of the Anthony Braxton quartet and the Butch Morris Orchestra. His sextet Memorial Barbecue is invited at the international jazz festival in S.Anna Arresi.
Moving to Berlin he started collaborations with many players such as Toby Delius, Axel Dörner, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Michael Thieke, Håvard Wiik, Olaf Rupp, Günther "Baby" Sommer, Achim Kaufmann, Matthias Schubert, Henrik Walsdorf, Christian Lillinger. He played, toured and recorded with many other musicians such as Han Bennink, Taylor Ho Bynum, Mary Halvorson, John Tchicai, Sven Ake Johanson, Leo Smith, Cristian Calcagnile, Edoardo Marraffa, Pasquale Mirra, Vincenzo Vasi, Mirko Sabatini, Fabrizio Puglisi.
Michael Thieke (1971)
clarinet | composer/performer
The Berlin-based clarinetist/composer/performer Michael Thieke is equally at home across a broad range of musical environments, such as experimental song forms, collectively composing projects, improvising collectives, and music on the fringes of jazz. He is exploring the minutiae of sound, timbre and noise, with a particular interest in microtonality and related sound phenomena, and with a preference for long-term collaborations and collective work.
Some of his current Projects are: The International Nothing, The Magic I.D., The Pitch, Voutchkova/Thieke, Splitter Orchester, Porta Chiusa, Gebhard Ullmann's The Clarinet Trio. He has played tours and festivals all over Europe and in Japan, Canada, USA, Russia, China and Lebanon and his work has been documented on over 60 CDs and or LPs.
Håvard Wiik (1975)
Håvard Wiik studied jazz and composition at the jazz department at Trondheim Music Conservatory. He is one of Norway's most respected and profiled jazz pianists. For more than a decade Håvard has been a member and founder of several of the most important Scandinavian music ensembles (Atomic, Motif, Free Fall), has toured all over the world with these groups, and he's also a been the first choice accompaniment for several international jazz greats. Håvard relocated to Berlin in 2007, where he now works with musicians such as Axel Dörner, Michael Thieke, Toby Delius, Jan Roder, Christian Lillinger, Oliver Steidle Clayton Thomas and Antonio Borghini.
