Series of Workshops to get older adults more physically active, run over 6 weeks.
About this Event
The workshop commences Wednesday 15th of April at10am and will run every Wednesday for 6 weeks with an option of a 7th week called 'whirl and twirl'. Every Wednesday in Wellington Hall in Dundalk for 6 weeks.
Louth Local Sports Partnerships are creating an opportunity for Older Adults (over 55) to get more active through collaboration with Age and Opportunity. The mission of the Active programme, the national programme for sport and physical activity for older people. Learn some gentle exercises to improve your balance, try your hand at kurling or bowling.
PALs (Physical Activity Leaders) is an initiative which trains older people to lead sport and activity sessions in their local groups and communities.
How does it work?
Anyone training to become a PAL will need to attend six different workshops (five hours each) with an option of a seventh dance class after the six weeks. Participants will engage in both practical and theory work to ensure they receive all the knowledge and skills to lead their local group in physical activity. This initiative is FREE to participants and is delivered in partnership with Age and Opportunity.
The PALs Workshops are:
Workshop 1
Basic Principles
The main aims of this workshop are to:
• introduce participants to the Go for Life campaign
• propose procedures regarding checking, screening and monitoring the wellbeing of participants before and during physical activity bouts/sessions
• enable the PAL to lead a Warm Up and Warm Down routine suitable for older people
Workshop 2
Sit & Fit
The main aims of this workshop are to:
• explore a range of chair-based activities suitable
Workshop 3
Better Balance
The main aims of this workshop are to
• explore a range of activities geared to improve older people's balance
Workshop 4
Going Strong
The main aims of this workshop are to
• explore a range of activities geared to improve older people's strength
Workshop 5
Rolling & Bowling
The main aims of this workshop are to;
• enable the PAL to introduce a range of bowling activities
Workshop 6
Pitching & Tossing
The main aims of this workshop are to:
• explore a range of pitching and tossing games/sports
Stepping & Strolling
The main aims of this workshop are to:
• explore a range of activities geared to motivate through walking activities
PALs Skills
The main aims of this workshop are to:
• outline a range of skills to plan safe and enjoyable physical activity sessions for older people
Before starting to become much more physically active or BEFORE you have a fitness appraisal. You may be able to do any activity you want — as long as you start slowly and build up gradually. Or, you may need to restrict your activities to those which are safe for you. Talk with your doctor about the kinds of activities you wish to participate in and follow his/her advice.
You should understand that when participating in any exercise or exercise program, there is the possibility of physical injury.
