Our classes are always pay what you can!

Join us for a painting class that explores the use of light in the style of Agnes Martin!

We are very excited to bring back Frances Stanfield's series of online classes that will show you how to capture light in your paintings through the techniques of three renowned artists: Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, and Alma Thomas. Each stand-alone class will focus on a different artist's approach to capturing light, from Rothko's luminous colour fields to Martin's subtle use of line and Thomas' crackled and bold colour combinations.

You'll learn how to manipulate your brushwork, layer colours to create depth and luminosity in your paintings. Through these classes you'll gain a deeper understanding of how light can evoke emotional responses in the viewer, and how to use these elements to create your own unique works of art.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced painter, these classes will provide you with ideas and techniques to inspire you in your own creative ventures.

"My (artworks) have neither object nor space nor line nor anything – no forms. They are light, lightness, about merging, about formlessness, breaking down form..."
- Agnes Martin

In this class, we will explore the soft, diffused light within the paintings of Agnes Martin and gain inspiration from her minimalist approach. Although her quote above states otherwise, Martin's work is known for her use of grids, lines, and subdued colours. Her paintings often convey a sense of serenity and stillness.

Born in Canada in 1912, Martin moved to the United States in the 1940s and became associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. However, her work quickly evolved into a more minimalistic style, with an emphasis on simple geometric shapes and muted colour palettes. Martin sought to capture the essence of nature and the spiritual through her art, creating pieces that were both contemplative and reflective.

When it comes to painting light, Martin's technique involved using subtle shades of colour and carefully placed lines to create an illusion of depth and luminosity. Her paintings often feature a soft, diffused light that seems to emanate from within the canvas itself. In this class, we will explore Martin's approach to painting light and how to create something similar in our own work.

Through a series of guided exercises and demonstrations, we will experiment with different colour combinations, line weights, and brush strokes. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter, this class will give you ideas and techniques that you can use to elevate your own works.

Frances will be teaching from her London studio and so will also be sharing her findings in painting light within her own art practice.

"Nature is like parting a curtain, you go into it. I want to draw a certain response like this.... that quality of response from people when they leave themselves behind, often experienced in nature, an experience of simple joy... My paintings are about merging, about formlessness... A world without objects, without interruption.“ - Agnes Martin

This class is suitable for all levels
