Après la projection, WEBSTER, spécialiste de l'histoire de l'esclavage au Québec et au Canada, sera avec nous pour une période de questions-réponses. Une occasion rare d'aller plus loin, ensemble.

Synopsis:
1759. Isle de France (actuelle île Maurice). Massamba et Mati, esclaves dans la plantation d’Eugène Larcenet, vivent dans la peur et le labeur. Lui rêve que sa fille soit affranchie, elle de quitter l’enfer vert de la canne à sucre.
Une nuit, elle s’enfuit. Madame La Victoire, célèbre chasseuse d’esclaves, est engagée pour la traquer. Massamba n’a d’autre choix que de s’évader à son tour. Par cet acte, il devient un « marron », un fugitif qui rompt à jamais
avec l’ordre colonial.

Our next film club is coming, and it’s unlike any other.

We invite you to join us for a screening of NO CHAINS NO MASTERS, the powerful film by Simon Moutaïrou that dives into the history of slavery and the pursuit of freedom.
And this time, the experience doesn’t end when the credits roll.
After the screening, Webster, a specialist in the history of slavery in Quebec and Canada, will join us for a Q&A session, a rare opportunity to go deeper, together.

Synopsis:
1759, Mauritius Island, Indian Ocean. The island is controlled by French settlers and the deported slave population live in fear while toiling
in the sugar cane plantations. Unlike her disillusioned father Massamba, Mati
refuses to keep her head down and accept her fate.
One night she flees from the plantation, hoping to escape violence and seek freedom in a remote part of the island, where a community of fugitives is said to live.
As the plantation owner hires the merciless slave hunter Madame La Victoire and her sons to pursue Mati, Massamba realises the brutal consequences awaiting his daughter if she’s captured. He has no choice but to break his chains and set off on a desperate search for her. As a relentless hunt ensues
in the island’s unforgiving jungle, the father and daughter forever break away from the colonial order.
