On 13th March the Pilgrimage for Palestine is visiting Oxford. This pilgrimage has been organised in order to raise awareness of the appalling crimes still being committed in Gaza and to raise money for the Hands Up Project a charity that does amazing work in supporting young Palestinians in using poetry and drama to help cope with the trauma they are suffering . A number of Oxford groups who are concerned at the genocide being perpetrated in Gaza are gathering to welcome the pilgrimage and to share our responses in poetry, music, dance and art to the beautiful work created by the Hands Up Project young poets – which we will also be sharing through links to Cairo and Hebron. This is a free event but we do welcome donations to the Hands Up Project. We will begin with a bring and share Iftar and then move to sharing work and later to welcoming the pilgrimage. There are already a lot of performers from Oxford and beyond lined up to perform and these include
Nuzhat Abbas songs in Punjabi in response to the Hands Up Poetry
Ali Pali leading Dabke Dance
Delaram Izadi songs in Farsi
Helen Edwards movement for peace
Adnan Al Sayegh – a special guest from London and Jenny Lewis reading Adnan’s poetry in Arabic and in English translation
Lizzy Spight and Malcolm Atkins sung settings of poetry by the Hands Up Project
Sing4Gaza group leading peace chants and other work including a Threnody or Gaza and names of young people murdered in Gaza
Readings of poems written by Palestinian children – live link with Cairo (this will be the focus from which all else emanates)
Talks by Peter Oswald and Nick Bilbrough from the Pilgrimage
And much more….
