Have you ever noticed the beautiful tree swallows around you? With their shimmering, colorful wings and graceful, jet-like flight, they are a joy to watch as they swoop and zoom through the air in search of insects. Their soft, musical bird songs and agile movements make them one of the most captivating sights in wetland and open habitats. You may have even spotted them near local Laguna or seen them nesting in bird boxes, raising their young just a few feet from where people pass by.
The Petaluma Wetlands Alliance (PWA) has supported local bird populations through its nest box program for nearly 20 years. Volunteers install, maintain, and monitor 60 nest boxes across six locations, providing safe nesting sites for species like tree swallows and bluebirds while tracking their nesting success.
PWA also participates in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology NestWatch citizen science program, contributing data that helps scientists better understand bird populations and environmental changes.
Presenters:
Linda Sheppard, coordinator of the NestWatch program, along with Len Nelson and Sheryl Nadeau, are long-time nest box builders and highly experienced monitors. Together, they bring years of knowledge, dedication, and hands-on experience in bird conservation and community science.
