About this Event

dir. Adam Martinec / 2024 / drama, comedy / Czechia, Slovakia / Czech with English subtitles / 84 minutes

Every year, Karel and his family come together for their time-honored pig-killing tradition—a ritual filled with laughter, food, and an air of festivity. But beneath the surface, unresolved conflicts and buried secrets simmer, turning the gathering into a chaotic, revealing ordeal. As tensions reach a breaking point, Karel is forced to confront harsh truths about himself and those around him.

Our Lovely Pig Slaughter (Mord) is a 2024 Czech-Slovak tragicomedy marking the feature directorial debut of Adam Martinec. More than just a portrayal of rural tradition, the film offers a profound study of Czech society, exploring themes of loneliness, miscommunication, and self-worth. According to Martinec, the story delves into how conversations often lack the right words, how little people truly listen to one another, and how difficult it is to stand up for oneself.

The film premiered at the 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it earned the Special Jury Award. Its sharp humor and vividly drawn characters have drawn comparisons to the defining works of the Czechoslovak New Wave, cementing Our Lovely Pig Slaughter as a striking new entry in contemporary Central European cinema.
