SIGN UP BELLOWKendo (剣道, "way of the sword") is a Japanese martial art with deep origins in traditional Japanese swordsmanship dating back to the time of the Samurai. Although the katana has now been replaced by a bamboo sword, the practice of kendo emphasizes the development of one's character, focusing on discipline, perseverance, and respect for others.
The Otago Kendo Club welcomes any people new to Kendo to join our beginner's course (below 16 will need their parent’s consent). The beginner's course is 6 weeks long, training every Monday and Thursday and has been designed to teach everything you need to safely join a regular Kendo training with the rest of the club. Included in the course is a free bamboo training sword (shinai) that you will take home after sessions and the club will provide any other equipment needed. You will need to wear suitable clothing for sports and bring water.
Course Details:
• When: Mondays 6:00pm-7:00pm, Thursdays at 7:30-8:30pm
• Location: Logan Park High School Gym 74 Butts Road Dunedin
• Cost: $150 or $125 for students and families (includes a free shinai - bamboo sword)
