About this Event

Orthodox Hymns for the Soul

For the first time, the world-renowned Russian Orthodox Male Choir of Australia (ROMCA) presents a concert in Tasmania, performing within the magnificent acoustic and spiritual setting of St David’s Cathedral, Hobart.

Founded in Australia and recognised internationally, ROMCA is regarded as one of the world’s leading professional Orthodox vocal ensembles that performs Orthodox spiritual music and folk music of varying origins. The choir has toured extensively both domestically and internationally, released multiple professional recordings listened to by audiences around the globe, and is preparing for a major upcoming performance at the Sydney Opera House in September 2026.

Renowned for its depth of sound, precision, and authenticity - and for possessing some of the lowest bass voices (oktavists) in the world, ROMCA brings centuries-old sacred music to life with profound reverence and artistry.

This program, Orthodox Hymns for the Soul, traces the rich evolution of Orthodox sacred music across cultures and centuries. Audiences will experience masterworks by great Russian Orthodox composers, powerful Serbian choral traditions, and ancient Greek Orthodox chants, revealing how a shared faith gave rise to distinct yet deeply connected musical languages. From contemplative chant to monumental choral harmonies, this concert offers a rare opportunity to hear the Orthodox tradition in its full spiritual and musical breadth.

This Tasmanian debut promises an immersive and transcendent experience - a moment of stillness, beauty, and reflection through one of the world’s most profound sacred musical traditions.
