On Sunday 26 May the Ōrākei Basin will come alive with sound.
The Audio Foundation presents Oro Orakei – an experiential sound walk featuring live performers and sound installations along the Orakei Basin walkway.
Listen to sounds created by a variety of local sound artists and musicians in response to the unique environment of the Basin . With lakeside instrumentalists, floating and hanging sculptures, Taonga Puoro in the bush, gongs on the water and more – each work will inspire new ways of perceiving – where one can choose to stay and listen or walk on to the next point for a new experience.
The sound walk will be a fun and interesting way to experience the lagoon and the Walkway, while offering attendees an opportunity to engage with the environment in a unique and immersive way.
Artists:
MELISSA LAING – ‘Sea, Water & Mud’ Floating sound sculptures
ERIKA GRANT & CHRIS O’CONNOR – Gong Bathing Lakeside
RAHANA LARSEN TAYLOR & ABIGAIL AROHA JENSEN – Two young sound artists perform Taonga Puoro (traditional Māori instruments) amongst the natural landscape of the Ōrākei reserve.
KRISTIAN LARSEN – A 16-channel speaker installation on the railway bridge walkway
ROSIE LANGABEER, ISAAC SMITH & GERARD CREWDSON – Accordion, brass, clarinet, percussion and bits and bobs in the Basin
IZA LOZANO – Ceramic sound objects suspended in air

Presented by Audio Foundation with the support of Ōrākei Local Board.
Duration: 12PM – 4PM
Getting there: You can access the walk from the Ōrākei train station, or from Ōrākei Road. You can also access it from Meadowbank Train Station, or Purewa Road in Meadowbank.
Access: This walk takes you around the edge of the basin using the boardwalk and bridge across the Purewa arm of the basin. Most of the walk is flat, however there are some steps and steep areas to be aware of, especially behind the water ski club and as you approach Meadowbank Road. These may be a challenge for less confident walkers. It is possible to navigate a pram through these sections but the path is not accessible for wheelchair users. Sections that are wheelchair accessible will be highlighted on the map. Contact [email protected] if you need more information.
Parking: There is limited parking in the Ōrākei Basin carpark.
