ORISHAS: The Sacred Roots of Samba
A powerful dance theatre experience celebrating the Afro-Brazilian roots of samba
Before samba became one of the most celebrated dances in the world, its rhythms and movements were deeply connected to the spiritual and cultural traditions of Afro-Brazilian communities.
Orishas: The Sacred Roots of Samba is a vibrant dance production that explores this powerful journey — from sacred ritual to the joyful explosion of Brazilian samba.
The evening begins with evocative imagery filmed in Bahia, Brazil, where choreographer Carine Fortunato traveled to study Afro-Brazilian dance and research the connection between the Orishas and the roots of samba.
Inspired by the movements, rhythms, and symbolism of the Orishas — powerful forces of nature honored in Afro-Brazilian spirituality — the performance opens with Afro-contemporary choreography that reflects these ancestral energies.
As the show unfolds, audiences are taken on a rhythmic journey through the evolution of samba, featuring dynamic performances inspired by:
• Afro-Brazilian dance traditions
• Samba de Malandro
• Pagode and social samba styles
• The electrifying energy of Rio Carnival
The evening culminates in a dazzling celebration of samba with stunning Rio-style passista costumes, vibrant choreography, and infectious Brazilian rhythms that will leave audiences inspired and energized.
More than a dance show, Orishas: The Sacred Roots of Samba is a tribute to the culture, history, and ancestral rhythms that gave birth to one of Brazil’s most iconic art forms.
