Petr Eben (1929-2007) was a Czech composer, organist, pianist, and improviser. “From his teenage years Eben’s experiences brought him face to face with human beings’ capacity to inflict misery and terror on each other. Although his family embraced the Catholic faith, Eben’s father was a Jew, and as a result the young Petr was expelled from school and along with his brother imprisoned in the concentration camp at Buchenwald.” (David Wordsworth, 2007)
The composer’s experiences during Nazi, and later Soviet occupation in Czechoslovakia, as well as a deep, profound Christian faith, inspired his dark and expressive style. His music has an unforgettable and unique sound: on the one hand filled with brutal dissonance and rhythmic intensity, on the other, pure and hopeful contemplation, often based on liturgical themes and catholic chants. Eben arranges all of this intensity into beautiful, thoughtful, and satisfying classical forms.

from "Musica Dominicalis":
I. Fantasia I,
III. Moto Ostinato
Petr Eben wrote about what is today his most performed work: “I intended the title ‘Sunday Music’ – Musica dominicalis – to imply that this was not everyday music but a work of celebration.” It is an organ symphony in four parts. You will hear two movements: the first movement, a fantasia, based on a gregorian chant theme (kyrie XI); and the third - “Moto Ostinato” (“persistent motion”) - a scherzo symbolising the struggle between good and evil.

"Job" is an organ cycle inspired by the biblical story of Job. It's about human suffering, faith, and redemption. Across the work, the organ becomes a voice for struggle, contemplation, and hope, moving from darkness to light.
• I. Destiny: "Then Satan said to the Lord: Put forth thine hand and touch Job and that he hath and he will curse thee to thy face"
• VI. Mystery of Creation: "The Lord answered Job:
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?"
• VIII. God's Reward : "And the Lord turned the captivity if Job and blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning"
