About this Event
Our preparations for planting in October went really well, and the winter rain and coming frosts will help to break down any roots left in the soil so we should have lovely soft ground to work with for planting in January!
We will be planting 16 apple trees over the weekend. We've chosen different varieties and root stocks that will give us a diverse orchard in terms of apple types and flavours, and tree longevity. The trees will grow to heights of 3-4m and become 'veteran' trees after 15 years, which means they can quickly become long-lasting diverse habitats for a multitude of species. They will of course also bear fruit for us to eat, as well as providing food for birds and pollinators. All the apples we've chosen are good for juicing so we can imagine the delicious juices we'll be creating in a few years time as we plant the trees!
We will also be planting a willow bed to provide a living mulch for the trees. Willow grows fast and the twiggy ends of the plants are full of growth nutrients, so each year you can trim off the new growth and leave these chopped ends on the soil around the trees. From there the willow will be brought down into the soil by worms and other composting organisms providing the trees with a regular dose of essential nutrients.
We will also be celebrating, dressing and blessing the trees, symbolically welcoming them to their new homes and into our care.
