Á hálfrar aldar ferli hefur Björk Guðmundsdóttir verið óþreytandi við að þenja hefðbundin mörk tónlistarformsins og í stöðugum tilraunum sínum ofið saman listum, náttúru og tækni.
Þrjár innsetningar veita gestum einstakt tækifæri til að upplifa alltumlykjandi verk sem búa yfir kynngimagnaðri hljóðrænni, sjónrænni og tilfinningalegri dýpt. Tvö þeirra eru tregaljóð, samin og útsett af Björk í minningu móður hennar, og hið þriðja er nýtt verk af væntanlegri plötu Bjarkar.
Í Ancestress er tekist á við hringrás lífsins. Í afskekktum dal birtist okkur eins konar helgiganga tónlistarfólks og dansara. Verkið er samið og útsett af Björk fyrir strengjasveit og slagverk.
Hið pólýfóníska þriggja-kóra-verk Sorrowful Soil er sálumessa þar sem kanón-legar laglínur veltast um á milli radda. Úr þrjátíu hátölörum berast einstaka raddir meðlima Hamrahlíðarkórsins, undir stjórn Þorgerðar Ingólfsdóttur. Verkið er samið og útsett af Björk fyrir níu radda kór.
Samhliða sýningu Bjarkar stendur yfir sýning James Merry í sal 4, Ummyndlingar, en tvíeikið hefur unnið náið saman í fjölda ára.

James Merry hefur á síðasta áratug skapað grímur sem eru í raun umbreytingarafl, driffjöður í listgjörningum og gátt að breyttri sjálfsmynd. Í brennipunkti sýningarinnar er augnablikið þegar hamskiptin verða – þegar formið og sjálfið flæða saman. Ummyndlingar er fyrsta yfirlitssýningin á verkum Merrys en þar verða rúmlega áttatíu verk.
Grímurnar bera vitni um einstakt handbragð þar sem blandað er saman hefðbundnum aðferðum og öðrum nýstárlegri; útsaumur, málmsmíði, þrívíddarprentun, silfursmíði og gagnvirk, stafræn verk. Úr verður sveigur síkvikra sköpunarverka er veita okkur djúpstæða innsýn í óbilandi hrifningu Merrys á lífríkinu, sem og áhuga hans á fornleifafræði og fornum helgisiðum.
Margar af grímunum á sýningunni skapaði listamaðurinn fyrir Björk Guðmundsdóttur en þau hafa átt langt samstarf. Á sýningunni verða einnig verk sem unnin hafa verið fyrir aðra listamenn eins og Tildu Swinton og Iris van Herpen. Sum þessara verka hafa áður verið sýnd á listviðburðum og hátískusýningum en hér gefst einstakt tækifæri til að upplifa grímurnar sem sjálfstæð verk.

Welcome to the opening of the exhibitions Echolalia by Björk and Metamorphlings by James Merry on May 30 at 6 PM at the National Gallery of Iceland.
The exhibitions will take over all four galleries of the National Gallery of Iceland on Fríkirkjuvegur 7. and are part of the Reykjavík Arts Festival, which also opens on May 30, 2026.

The National Gallery of Iceland presents an exhibition of Björk, the visionary musician whose work keeps pushing conventional boundaries, interweaving art, nature, and technology with restless experimentation.
Three songs are presented at the museum on a theatrical scale for the first time – two elegiac works – Ancestress and Sorrowful Soil – composed and arranged by Björk in honour of her mother, are accompanied by a new work derived from the artist’s forthcoming album.
Ancestress reckons with the cyclical nature of life. Set in a remote valley in Iceland, the lamentation is staged as a ritualistic procession of musicians and dancers.
Sorrowful Soil is a 9-part choral work – a requiem where canon-like melodies tumble amongst 3 groups of singers in a polychoral way. Thirty speakers each transmit a single voice from the Hamrahlíð choir, conducted by Þorgerður Ingólfsdóttir.
The exhibition is presented alongside Metamorphlings, an exhibition of James Merry, Björk's long time collaborator, in Gallery 4.

Metamorphlings is the first museum retrospective of the artist’s work. Comprising over 80 artworks, the exhibition offers a window into the evolution of Merry’s artistic output over the past decade. During this time, he has developed a body of work centered on the mask – operating as a conduit for transformation, a catalyst for performance, and a portal through which identity can mutate. The exhibition focuses on the moment of metamorphosis when form and self are fluid.
The masks on view showcase Merry’s craftsmanship, which uniquely blends traditional techniques with contemporary, avant-garde expressions. Visitors encounter works in a
range of mediums: embroidery, metalwork, 3D printing, jewelry, and interactive digital displays. Collectively, these works – the Metamorphlings – form a family of shape shifting creations that can offer a deeper insight into Merry’s unending fascination with the natural world, as well as his abiding interest in archaeology and ancient ritual.
Many of the masks included in the exhibition were created for Björk Guðmundsdóttir as part of their long-standing artistic collaboration.
