Escape to the storied lands of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden in "The Scandinavian Home: Landscape and Lore." This is the first exhibition to examine the entangled notions of home and homeland that were central to the art of each nation in the second half of the 19th century. The arts played a crucial role in reinforcing a shared sense of belonging as Nordic countries strove to identify and celebrate authentic local and national identities. From enchanting landscapes and portraits to exquisite furniture and decorative arts, The Scandinavian Home features rare tapestries by Gerhard Munthe, ceramics by Alfred William Finch, silver by Henrik Møller, and landscape paintings by Hilma af Klint, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, and Gustaf Fjaestad. Organized by The Frick Pittsburgh, this exhibition unites works of art from prominent public institutions and private collectors, and it offers a singular opportunity for a comprehensive and multimedia exploration of this seminal period in Scandinavian culture.
