About this Event
ONYX: A Black Artist Exhibition features Black artists who are from or currently based in San Diego. The exhibition centers local voices while engaging broader conversations around Black artistic expression in visual art and music.
ONYX explores Black artist identity as inherently multifaceted. Moving beyond singular narratives, the exhibition creates space for ambiguity, experimentation, and personal storytelling. The works on view reflect a wide spectrum of mediums and perspectives, allowing each artist’s voice to exist fully on its own terms while contributing to a larger collective portrait of Black creativity in San Diego today.
The title ONYX functions as both symbol and metaphor. Like the stone itself, the exhibition speaks to connections formed through depth and layered identities, but it also references the act of mining and discovery
“Many of the artists included in this exhibition were people I encountered simply through conversation, social media, and speaking openly about my desire to create intentional space for Black artists in San Diego. With each discovery came the same question: how had I never encountered this work before? And if I had, how could it be presented in a way that truly honors the amount of talent, education, and care these artists possess?“ - Imani Camara, Curator
In this way, ONYX positions these artists as hidden gems, not because the work isn't out there, but because there are simply not enough Black art exhibitions within San Diego. The exhibition pushes against that by creating a dedicated space where Black artists are not peripheral, but central.
At its core, ONYX is also about formation. The San Diego Black art scene is still actively taking shape, and this exhibition recognizes that a true generation of Black visual and contemporary artists cannot thrive in San Diego without intentional investment, visibility, documentation, and community support. By bringing these artists together, ONYX becomes both an exhibition and a point of connection, a way of affirming that this creative ecosystem exists and deserves sustained attention.
