About this Event
What is there to say about old fag packets and beer mats? Quite a lot it seems. The social and design history is fascinating.
Hammersmith artist Madeleine Marsh will be talking about making art from found objects, using everything from 1970s beer mats to vintage cigarette packets, to antique sewing materials, to finds rescued from skips and mud-larked from the Thames.
She will explore how these discarded everyday items bring the past to life and give an insight into our present. Expect a burst of colour, a bit of history and a cheerful celebration of the joys of stuff, exploring the stories hidden behind everyday objects.
Madeleine is a multi-media artist, making jewellery, sculpture and other decorative pieces. A west Londoner born and bred, she has mud-larked the Thames and canals for many years. Inspired by her previous career as a writer and broadcaster specializing in art and antiques, much of her work is made from found and vintage objects. She uses her finds both to explore the past and to make us think about the present. Be it a six-foot mermaid sculpture, a mirror decorated with 70s beer mats, or a pair of earrings, all her creations tell a story (sometimes a funny one) and each piece is unique. Madeleine’s work can now be found in collections across the world.
She is one of 16 artists currently taking part in The Chiswick Calendar's Spring Art Exhibition at the Clayton hotel. The artwork is in the hotel's atrium. Come early and get a drink at the bar and have a look at the exhibition before Madeleine's talk in the ground floor board room at 7pm.
