In the middle of Wedding — one of Berlin’s most multicultural neighborhoods, where the streets know each other, where sounds travel through open windows, where the air often carries hints of oriental spices and fragrances, and where nights often turn into stories — we invite you to a special evening of Okujou Beat.
Hosted at Alter Schwede — a long-standing, authentic Berlin bar and true jazz institution deeply rooted in the city’s music culture — the night unfolds in a space where tradition and experimentation naturally meet.
Okujou Beat blends electronic textures, urban pulse, and live improvisation into an open musical space — a meeting point for friends, strangers, and everyone in between.
Wedding is not just the location — it’s part of the band’s story. Pianist Izumi calls this neighbourhood home, just like Chikara did for many years. Moussa Coulibaly’s rehearsal room sits right next to the bar itself, making this night feel almost like music spilling directly out of everyday life. After many journeys, stages, and travels, it feels special for us to finally play here — for a Weddinger crowd.
Okujou Beat is a collective that keeps opening doors between scenes — jazz, ambient, world music mixed with electronics improvisation, and beyond.
On stage: Johannes Heger (bass), Izumi Yamamoto (keys & synth), Chikara Aoshima (drums & electronics), Moussa Coulibaly (vocals, balafon, ngoni), and Ulf Lundberg (saxophone & flute). Together, they combine live instrumentation and electronic elements, layered percussion, and deep, groove-driven movement.
Between all of this, dreamlike synth worlds appear — expand — and fade back into rhythm again. Okujou Beat is like cinematic music without a film. Long live sessions that somehow feel like moments passing too fast.
