A film crew records proceedings as dissidents opposed to President Nixon's regime are stripped of their rights and forced to choose between jail and trying to survive three days in a Californian desert, hunted by National Guard trainees. Watkins's chilling vérité-style mockumentary once seemed far-fetched. Not any more.
NL/ Elk jaar stelt Offscreen een thematische avond voor vol rariteiten: vergeten trailers, voorlichtingsfilmpjes, televisie-archiefbeelden, ... Dit jaar wordt het een heuse American Night met het profetische Punishment Park als centraal punt, waarrond we heel wat hallucinant materiaal hebben verzameld dat 100% made in the USA is.
PUNISHMENT PARK
Een filmploeg volgt de ad-hocprocessen van dissidenten die zich verzetten tegen Nixon's regime. Ze krijgen de keuze tussen een celstraf of drie dagen overleven in de Californische woestijn, opgejaagd door de Nationale Garde. Een ijzingwekkende mockumentary in vérité-stijl die ooit vergezocht leek. Nu niet meer...
FR/ Chaque année, Offscreen propose une soirée thématique truffée de raretés: bande annonces oubliées, films d'information publique, archives télévisées... notre American Night se construit cette année autour du film dissident Punishment Park, qui sera précédé de curiosités made in America.
PUNISHMENT PARK
Dans son film le plus célèbre, le regretté Peter Watkins met en scène une Amérique (à peine) dystopique, où le gouvernement offre aux militants pacifistes d'absoudre leurs peines de prison en marchant dans un désert aride. Une chaîne de télévision anglaise filme les événements. Un mockumentary brutal et incontournable.
