✨Taonga o te Marama/Object of the Month is a new monthly lunchtime talk shining a spotlight on the remarkable taonga and objects from across our collections. Held on the third Friday of every month, these short, informal talks offer a fresh way to hear the stories behind the objects — and the experts who care for them.🔭A modest-looking telescope crafted from a drainpipe will take centre stage this month — revealing the remarkable ingenuity of one of Whanganui’s most significant amateur astronomers of his time.
The telescope was made around 1900 by pioneering amateur astronomer and telescope maker, Joseph Thomas Ward (1862–1927).
🗣️Join Maeve Egan, Kaihāpai Taonga/Curator, Social and Natural History, as she presents Joseph Ward's telescope and accompanying prism and lenses.
Free talk. All welcome.
