About this Event
Please join the Oakland Civic Orchestra for its “Shostakovich!” concert on Sunday, February 15, at 4:00 p.m., at Valley Center for Performing Arts, 3500 Mountain Blvd., in Oakland.
The concert opens with the reverent Hymn for Everyone by Jessie Montgomery, followed by the premiere of Composer-in-Residence Niko Umar Durr’s Interlude, a prayerful excerpt from a new work for strings. Finally, Music Director Martha Stoddard leads the tumultuous Tenth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich, the iconic work often described as a portrait of Stalin and which premiered in December 1953, just months after Stalin's death.
