About this Event

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is the non-departmental government body responsible for one of the largest environmental restoration projects in Europe; cleaning up the UK’s civil nuclear legacy.

They sponsor academic research at the postgraduate level at universities across the UK to ensure that we have the fundamental knowledge to underpin our strategies, and to create the technical experts and future leaders that we need to carry out the mission over the 100+ years it will take.

The NDA’s Research Manager, Rick Short, will give an overview of the mission and talk about the wide range of topics that are covered by the NDA’s academic research programme. This goes beyond just “nuclear science” and includes themes as broad as socioeconomics, risk forecasting, business management, heritage and organisational psychology.

Speaker Bio

Rick Short is the Research Manager for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Rick manages the NDA’s university research portfolio, sponsoring PhD and postdoctoral research that supports civil nuclear decommissioning in the UK. As well as the academic sector, he works extensively with other research funders and stakeholders in the NDA Group, DESNZ, UKRI, national labs and wider industry to coordinate effort and ensure that the UK maintains a national academic capability to support the mission. He sits on several academic and industrial advisory boards and steering groups.

Rick’s technical background is in materials science and prior to joining NDA he spent a decade on the Sellafield site, working for the UK National Nuclear Laboratory supporting the High Level Waste Vitrification Plant. He was also the inaugural PhD student to graduate from the University of Sheffield Immobilisation Science Laboratory.
