Our November sketch meet will be inside beautiful Rutherford House. https://rutherfordhouse.ca/ We thought that it would be pleasant for a change to be sketching at a historic building that is not under threat of demolition.
Location: Rutherford House on the University of Alberta campus. 11153 Saskatchewan Drive.
Date and time: Saturday November 16th from 11AM to 1PM
Lunch: HUB Mall – Riverside Lounge
We will meet inside Rutherford House in the foyer at 11:00am. The staff at Rutherford House have kindly offered us a discounted rate of $4.50 per person for our group which you can pay individually as you arrive. They will provide us with a brief history of the house, and then we are free to sketch in any locations in the house that are not in the way of other guests or staff.
Because this is a historic site, Rutherford House staff have asked us to sketch with dry materials only, in order to ensure the safety of artifacts and historical surfaces. You are free to add to your sketches later at home with watercolours and other wet materials.
We will meet again in the foyer of the house at 1:00pm to share sketches and take photos and then we will head over to HUB Mall for lunch, which is right beside Rutherford House. You can purchase your take-out lunch at any of the restaurants in the mall, and then we will meet and eat in the upstairs Riverside Lounge that is closest to the north end of the mall.
The basement and main floor are wheelchair accessible, and a wheelchair accessible washroom is available in the basement.
There is metered parking along Saskatchewan Drive and the LRT and buses are nearby on 89 Avenue.
Some background from the Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site website: This was the home of the first Premier of Alberta, Alexander Cameron Rutherford. In 1911, A.C. Rutherford, his wife Mattie, and their family moved into this beautiful brick mansion on the University of Alberta campus. The family entertained friends, relatives, and influential Edmontonians for more than a generation. Today, this restored and furnished Edwardian-era home maintains the Rutherford tradition of hospitality and offers visitors a glimpse into the past with costumed interpreters, guided tours, and special events.
