Join us on Wednesday, November 20th at the Italian Club as we continue our cultural programming with another exciting Sicilian Culture Presentation. We will welcome Dr. Davide Tanasi (PhD), USF Dept. of History to take us on a one of a kind journey through engaging storytelling and historical insights, this presentation aims to deepen appreciation for Sicily's mysteries and enchantments, inviting a closer look at its complex history and beauty. The presentation will include a variety of pictures and videos too! A delicious Italian Dinner will also be provided courtesy of our friends at Catering By The Family. Tickets are limited and will sell out fast! Every registration includes a charitable donation to the USF Foundation to support archaeological research programs in Sicily to help advance these types of programming
NOVEMBER TOPIC: Sicilian D-Day (9/7/43) – The Allied Liberation of Sicily! Step back in time to uncover the thrilling saga of WWII’s pivotal invasion, brought to life through previously unpublished primary sources! This lecture delves into the pivotal role American troops played during the invasion of the Island, capturing the dramatic interactions between the liberators and the local Sicilian population. Operation Husky, essentially a rehearsal for the iconic Normandy landing, was crucial for the subsequent retaking of Italy and Europe. Experience the war through the eyes of those who lived it, with insights drawn from oral history interviews and memoirs of American soldiers and Sicilians. Discover how these encounters forged enduring cultural bonds, reshaping Sicilian society and leaving a lasting American imprint. Join us for a unique historical journey, where personal stories bring the past to life, revealing the profound and lasting impact of Operation Husky on Sicilian culture and its pivotal role in the broader Allied victory.
