November 6th our guest will be the award-winning poet Susie Wilson with what must be a candidate for ‘most unusual’ pamphlet title of the year.
Join us all from 2 – 4pm Wednesday afternoon upstairs at Hull Central Library. Open mic list opens from one pm in the library cafe.
Half poet, half tutor, half clown, Susie lives and works in Sheffield. Her Disabled Poets Prize 2024 winning pamphlet, Nowhere Near As Safe As A Snake In Bed, dealing with living with advanced melanoma and the cutting-edge science used to treat it, is available to pre-order now and will be out on 21st November with Verve Poetry Press.
Skin The Rabbit, a micro-chapbook about growing up ‘strange’ will be out in May 2025 with The Braag. You can read her work online now in Carmen et Error, Propel 12, Ink Sweat & Tears, Northern Gravy and Black Bough. Her present artistic practices include jazz, drawing and clowning, leaning into her auDHD self. She’s also currently running Sub Club, a supportive space for coming together to critically discuss magazines, journals and where best to submit our work, on the first Tues of the month at Manchester Poetry Library (and possibly online) – see Eventbrite or contact her for details at @concordmoose.bsky.social or via www.susiewilsonpoet.com
We run the open mic at our monthly event each slot – strictly five minutes, please time your pieces at home beforehand.
This time constraint is vital to encourage different voices and subject matters, thus creating a varied listening experience for the audience. During the break we pass around the hat for donations. The suggested donation is two pounds per person. If you can’t donate we understand, it is not mandatory. All the money goes towards paying our guests.
Women of Words is an event series and platform for women writers, set up in 2016 as a response to what was then a male dominated scene. The stage is reserved for women, but men are and have always been, welcome in the audience.
Who: Susie Wilson
