The Notes of Anna Azzori – A Mirror That Travels Through Time (2020, 72 minutes, in Italian and German with English subtitles)
For years, Anna Azzori was known largely as the homeless, lice-infested and pregnant subject of a much-revered Italian documentary which propelled irreverent underground filmmakers Alberto Grifi and Massimo Sarchielli into countercultural icons. As the duo basked in their glory, the teenager – the one Sarchielli “rescued” from a piazza in Rome and housed in his apartment for three years – vanished from view and became a cipher at best and a phantom at worst. Observing how the two men merely tried to “make a film about reality, instead of changing reality”, Ruhm provides Anna with an afterlife in which the young woman (played by Gemma Vannuzzi) wander into the countryside to join a mythical female collective. In parallel, archive footage of Italy’s feminist movement during the turbulent 1970s provides a context in which Anna Azzori’s life is given new meaning.
The screening will be followed by a masterclass by Constanze Ruhm, conducted in English.
《The Notes of Anna Azzori – A Mirror That Travels Through Time》
