It Is At This Point That the Need To Write History Arises
(2024, 96 minutes, in German and Italian with English subtitles)
Described by Ruhm as “an archive of feminist art itself”, It Is At This Point That the Need To Write History Arises is inspired by Carla Lonzi, who abandoned her prominent career as an art critic to delve headlong into the struggle for the emancipation of women in Italy in the 1970s. Using Lonzi’s interest in the extraordinary story of a group of 17th century French female artists called Les Précieuses as the starting point, Ruhm’s feature conjures a complex “alternative history” in which fictional objects – a crate of 360-year-old film material discovered in a former women’s Pr*son, for example – exist in parallel with real yet underacknowledged achievements of women in writing, painting and music. An exciting exercise about suppressed memories rekindled by poetic imagery, as we witness history being rewritten – or at least a clarion call for that to happen, here and now.
Constanze Ruhm will meet the audience after the screening.
《It Is At This Point That the Need To Write History Arises》
Constanze Ruhm
