About this Event
"Not From Here, Not From There" (이방인)
A painting exhibition by a queer Korean-born artist based in San Francisco
Hosted by The smArt Collective (@the_smart_collective)
About the Exhibition
This series explores identity, queerness, and healing through figurative painting. The artist grew up in Seoul, South Korea, as a queer person who did not see himself reflected in public life. After experiencing bullying and intense pressure to conform, painting became a way to return to his younger self and rebuild a sense of wholeness.
The works depict soft, resting bodies—lying down, leaning on each other, or quietly becoming part of the landscape. Some figures appear like monks: grounded, calm, and taking up space without apology. Nature serves as a space of safety, where difference does not carry shame.
Who This Is For
This exhibition is for queer people, immigrants, and anyone who has ever felt "in between." At its core, it is about creating space for rest, reflection, and belonging—even when you have been told otherwise.
