About this Event
The Norland Maternity Practitioner course returns with new research-based content, updated information and the return of an in person teaching format.
Norlanders Elspeth Pitman (Head of Graduates) and Nia Pike (Alumni and Engagement Manager) will be teaching the updated course at Norland, Bath on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 March 2026.
The aim of this course is to provide specialist training to Norlanders to enable them to practice safely and effectively as a Maternity Practitioner. The training will be based on three units:
1. Caring for the Newborn Baby – this unit revisits in depth newborn appearance, common ailments, and core care routines. We will explore the neuroscience behind a baby’s brain development along with ways to tailor the care of the individual baby and their family. We will also cover newborn sleep needs, healthy sleep habits, and key SIDS risks and guidance to help parents follow safe-sleep practices.
2. Supporting the Family around the Newborn Baby – this unit explores key perinatal changes, common pregnancy complications, and practical ways to support a mother’s health. We will revisit feeding methods and safe preparation as well as diving a little deeper into newborn feeding needs, positioning, and common feeding issues. How to support the family more broadly will be discussed, considering family preferences and cultural differences as well as gaining an understanding of how to recognise and support perinatal mental health challenges, including postnatal depression.
3. Role and Responsibilities of the Maternity Practitioner – this unit discusses the role of Maternity Practitioners, including safeguarding duties, and how to manage differing family views. We will also explore how to manage interviews, bookings and contracts. And finally, the importance of staying informed through current research and CPD will be highlighted.
Following the classroom teaching each participant will have 8 weeks in which to complete a mixture of practical and written assessments and submit to [email protected].
Once you have successfully completed the course and assessments, a certificate of completion will be sent to you along with the Norland Maternity Practitioner badge which you can wear with pride alongside your Norland badge.
Lunch and light refreshments will be provided on both days.
Please note, photogtaphs may be taken to use on social media and internally at Norland. If you do not wish to be included in photo's please let a member of staff at the event know.
