The New Zealand Saxophone Society is thrilled to announce that Nobuya Sugawa, one of the world’s most revered saxophonists, will be performing in New Zealand for the first time. Sugawa’s extraordinary career has established him as a prominent figure in the world of saxophone music.The concert will showcase some of the most beautiful and technically demanding works in the saxophone repertoire. Sugawa will be joined by award-winning pianist Minako Koyanagi and the Akari Saxophone Quartet, featuring New Zealand saxophonists Simon Brew, Tomomi Johnston, and Michael Jamieson, and the renowned Dutch/Australian saxophonist Niels Bijl. With Sugawa’s unparalleled skill and artistry, combined with exceptional Australasian talent, this performance promises to be an unforgettable experience. Nobuya Sugawa
A graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts, Sugawa has won multiple prestigious awards and has released over 30 albums, many of which have garnered critical acclaim. He has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Philharmonic, Eastman Wind Ensemble, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and Slovak Radio Orchestra.
In addition to his work as a soloist, Sugawa spent more than 20 years as the concertmaster of the famous Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. He is also the soprano saxophonist of the renowned Trouvère Quartet, resident conductor of the Yamaha Symphonic Band, and a visiting professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
