A nine-time Grammy nominee and multi-faceted artist, Nnenna Freelon is most esteemed as a jazz vocalist, composer, arranger, producer, and arts education advocate. Her distinctive voice, in any medium, is a reflection of life, filled with personal stories, deep emotion, and quiet wisdom. Shaped by the loss of key members of her family, her heart-spoken songs of love and loss are featured in her latest album and debut book, both with the title of Beneath the Skin. Rooted in tradition but always forward-thinking, Nnenna’s artistry has attracted legendary collaborators and countless awards. She has performed with music luminaries such as Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Ramsey Lewis, Benny Golson, and Ellis Marsalis and once starred in a Hollywood Bowl Concert with Jessye Norman. In addition to winning awards named for Billie Holiday and Eubie Blake, she has been nominated twice as “Lady of Soul” by the the Soul Train Awards.
