The Nighttime Lab is set to take place on the evening of November 5th, 2024 at ROOM ART SPACE, during the World Urban Forum in Cairo.
About this Event

This event gathers city leaders, government representatives and a global community of nighttime experts to co-create knowledge and prototype innovative action models. Despite the growing movement of nighttime governance, scholarship, and advocacy, cities often overlook the value of nighttime culture.



Fishbowl 1: Urban Spaces and Social Cohesion – Fostering Healthy Urban Societies

Time: 6:45-7:30pm
Description: This fishbowl will explore how the design of urban spaces, particularly at night, can enhance social cohesion and support a healthy discourse in urban societies. By rethinking the role of nighttime spaces, we can create environments that foster community well-being and inclusivity, while addressing the challenges of safety, sleep, and equitable access to housing. The discussion will focus on how human settlements and urban design influence public engagement, trust, and social justice.

Speakers:


  • Juma Assiago (UN-Habitat) – Global Specialist - Human Settlements
  • Azza Sirry professor of urban planning at HBRC Housing and building national research center  (requested)
  • Nada Alhelabi (MDLBEAST Foundation) – Advocates for the power of music to promote inclusivity and well-being in urban settings, bridging music and urban transformation.
  • Ricardo Rio (Mayor of Braga, Portugal) – Combines political leadership with urban development strategies that enhance public space and cultural vibrancy in cities.
  • Sara Hoeflich (UCLG) – Expertise in establishing learning networks and peer learning activities makes her well-suited to discuss how local governments can collaborate to improve social cohesion and safety in nighttime environments.

Description: This fishbowl will address how a vibrant nightlife contributes to urban innovation, talent attraction, and the creation of livable cities. By emphasizing the role of culture, creativity, and well-being, the discussion will explore how cities can leverage their nighttime economies to retain talent and foster inclusivity. Experts will share insights on how the nighttime can serve as a catalyst for urban development and social innovation.

  • Alby Bocanegra (Urban Futurist) – Authority on how creativity can be harnessed to solve urban challenges and foster innovation in city development.
  • Raffaela Schmuck (BMW Foundation) – Focuses on sustainable urban transformation, with expertise in fostering cross-sector collaboration to improve urban well-being.
  • Lorrain de Silva (Best Nights VC) – Drives strategic investments in nightlife innovation, shaping the future of urban talent retention and creative economies.
  • Mostafa Aboughaly (Studio-More Architecture) – Expert in urban planning and sustainable design, exploring innovative approaches to revitalizing Cairo’s urban spaces through nighttime economies.
  • Jane Slingo (Director Electronic Music Conference Sydney, Director VibeLab Asia-Pacific) - Brings in-depth knowledge of how music and cultural events contribute to talent retention and urban innovation.
