The Meaning of Community
Nicholas Royle returns to LitFest in 2026 with another fascinating, and pertinent, keynote event. Nicholas always provides food for thought, and this year’s event promises to be equally intriguing and thought provoking.
Our theme for LitFest ’26 is Community Trust; this is felt to be apt for our times, as we can see communities flourishing in the face of uncertainty about difference.
Nicholas shares some thoughts about Community Trust, ahead of his keynote appearance:
For all the talk of society as broken (David Cameron, initially back in 2008), it seems that people in local communities still find ways of getting on with each other, often demonstrating surprising kindness to — and cooperation with — others. If we have to a significant degree lost our faith in politicians, we have perhaps not lost faith in one another. Despite many and perhaps increasing challenges, various kinds of community trust still seem to operate. What do we understand by ‘community trust’? Are there ways in which it is being threatened and eroded, both nationally and locally? Conversely, how might community trust be newly affirmed, developed and enhanced? This year’s Seaford LitFest invites us to think about these issues in fresh and creative ways.
Nicholas will talk about the meaning of community, which will be followed by an open discussion.
We welcome you to come a little early to get a drink before we start, and there will be refreshments available after the talk should you wish to join us to continue our conversation.
