This year marks the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. This was the first Ecumenical Council of the Church in which bishops and others from across the ancient world came together to discuss and determine matters of church teaching and church order.
Its principal contribution to the Church was the production of the first version of the document that has come to be known as “The Nicene Creed.” This statement of faith was designed to express the Christian formulation of God as Trinity.
In order to mark this anniversary, the Cathedral Scholars of St George’s Cathedral, and the former Archbishop of Perth, The Most Reverend Dr Peter Carnley, are offering a series of lectures on Nicene themes over the course of the year.
The Cathedral Scholars of St George’s Cathedral is a small group of distinguished academics from a variety of fields who have been commissioned by the Dean to provide contributions from their varying fields of expertise to enrich the common life of the community.
