About this Event

Dates: Saturdays, Feb 8, Feb 22, Mar 8, & Mar 29 10 am – 12 pm all days. Sales end: Feb 1. Ticket: $90. Instructor: Janie Yates. Materials fee: $5. Skills Needed: Students must be able to make a warp, dress a loom and weave independently.. Class Limit: 8

Doubleweave is a structure where one can weave two separate layers of cloth at the same time. These layers may be completely independent of each other or they can be attached on one or both sides or interwoven by loom controlled or hand manipulated pick-up. There are so many exciting things one can do with this weave structure!

This course will be an introduction to weaving double weave on a four shaft loom. We will meet four times for lecture, demonstration, critique and project planning. Students will have ample time between the sessions to complete assignments.

In the first session there will be a lecture and demonstration of the most basic double weave skills: weaving two separate layers of cloth, making the layers exchange places, weaving a double width cloth with the layers attached on one side and then the other, weaving a tube and weaving pockets that can be stuffed. Students will be given an handout with instructions for completing these skills at home.

Two weeks later we will meet for the second session. We will go over the students work from the first session and then I will demonstrate additional techniques including: weaving two separate layers where the top layer is leno lace that is "stitched" to the bottom layer, double weave pick up, quilting and more.

Two weeks after the second session we will meet for the third time to go over what you have learned and plan your final project. You will have three weeks to work on this project.

We will meet a fourth and final time to show your final projects and review.

This course is designed so that students may do the work at home on their own equipment. Guild members who take this course may have the opportunity to use a guild table loom or floor loom - however they must first check with Equipment Coordinator, Janie Yates, for availability.

NOTE: Please refrain from wearing scented lotion or perfume as the instructor is extremely sensitive to fragrance.

Supplies to Bring:

  • $5 materials fee payable to the instructor at start of class. Cash or check only accepted.

About Janie…If I had to describe myself in one line it would be this: Jane of All Trades, Artist at Large. For a very long time I felt pressure to narrow my focus and pick one media to master but I just could not do it. I am not just a weaver or a painter or a clothing designer or a teacher. I am all of these and more.

By the time I entered college I was proficient in crochet, macrame, tatting, embroidery, beadwork and sewing. I began my college career with an emphasis in drawing and painting but switched half way though to textiles. It was at Berea College that I learned to weave and to dye fabric using shibori and batik. After college I added colored pencil painting, decorative painting, clothing design, basketry, beaded jewelry, spinning, kumihimo, bobbin lace, several forms of band weaving, shoe making to my list of trades.

I married soon after college and had my son and daughter and for the next 24 years was very fortunate to be a full time mom. While my children were growing up I continued to acquire new skills and perfect existing ones through study, research and workshops. During this time I also began teaching numerous and widely varied textile related classes to children and adults. It gives me great satisfaction to teach a student a new skill that brings them joy.

I still have a very deep need to learn about and do everything related to yarn and fabric. And I still love to draw and paint. And I love to teach. I have about 14 pans in the fire at all times ... and that’s just fine.

If you are not feeling well, please contact the instructor instead of coming to the class. On a case-by-case basis, we may be able to reschedule you into a future class or provide a make-up lesson. Ticket fees are not normally refunded.

Depending on the for Hamilton County at the time the class is held, a mask may be required. If so, you will be notified before the first class.

Unless specifically stated, Weavers Guild classes are designed for ages 18 and above. On a case-by-case basis, a minor may be permitted to register for a class but must be accompanied by a registered adult who agrees to assist the minor during the class. Contact the Education Committee Chair at [email protected] for permission before registering any minor in a class.

Fees are non-refundable. Your fee will only be refunded if the class is canceled or changed to a different date. Three registrations are required for a class to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if a class is canceled due to an insufficient number of students. Eventbrite processing and credit card payment fees will not be refunded if a student cancels for any reason.
