About this Event

On June 10th, we present : "The Plastic League: Tracking Microplastics Back to the Source" by Prof. Roxana Sühring

We’ve all heard about microplastics — tiny fragments of plastic now found in oceans, rivers, soil, food, and even our bodies. Like many global environmental problems, plastic pollution can feel too massive to solve.

But what if the very complexity of plastic waste could become the key to stopping it?

In this fascinating lecture, Roxana Sühring reveals how her lab and international collaborators are developing new methods to trace microplastics back to their sources. By analyzing the unique chemical “fingerprints” carried by different plastics - not just the material itself, but the additives, dyes, and contaminants attached to it - researchers can identify dominant pollution sources and even specific polluters.

This emerging science could help regulators target cleanups more effectively, respond faster to especially harmful plastics, and create smarter policies grounded in evidence rather than guesswork.

Expect an accessible, eye-opening look at how cutting-edge chemistry is being used to tackle one of the world’s most frustrating environmental problems — and why there may be more hope than you think.

💡 About the incredible Professor Roxana Sühring

Roxana Sühring is an Associate Professor of Analytical Environmental Chemistry at Toronto Metropolitan University. She earned her doctorate in environmental chemistry from Leuphana University of Lüneburg and has conducted postdoctoral research in Germany, Canada, and Sweden.

Her interdisciplinary research focuses on innovative methods for identifying and characterizing plastic pollutants in the environment, including a Tri-Council funded project on chemical fingerprinting of microplastics. She has also led regulatory science teams in the UK and advised international agencies on marine pollution and environmental risk.

A sought-after speaker, her work has been featured in international conferences, documentaries, podcasts, and science outreach publications.
