Reduction Linocut Printmaking — 3 Week Course
Monday mornings, 10am–1pm | Shrewsbury Library
With Zoe from Mustard and Gray
Course Dates
Monday 13 April 2026 — Week 1
Monday 20 April 2026 — Week 2
Monday 27 April 2026 — Week 3
A gentle Monday morning introduction to printmaking, perfect if you’ve been curious but didn’t quite know where to begin. Across three sessions we’ll take things step by step, carving and printing from a single lino block and slowly building up a layered image full of colour and character.
Reduction lino is a lovely process — you print a colour, carve a little more away, then print again. The block gradually disappears as the image appears. It’s thoughtful, a bit magical, and very satisfying once the layers start lining up.
We’ll keep the pace relaxed and friendly while you learn how to plan a simple image, transfer it onto lino, carve safely and print each stage in sequence. You’ll try different papers, experiment with colour mixing and print both by hand (with a traditional bamboo baren) and using the press.
By the end you’ll have a small edition of prints and a clear understanding of how the process works — so you can happily carry on printing at home if the bug bites.
Course structure
Week 1 – Planning your image and making the first cuts
Week 2 – Printing and carving the second layer
Week 3 – Final reductions and finishing your edition
What to bring
Bring a simple image or idea suitable for an A5 print (landscapes, plants, buildings or bold shapes work beautifully). A sketchbook is handy but not essential, and a folder for taking prints home is useful.
All tools, inks and papers are provided, along with tea & coffee.
Suitable for complete beginners — no drawing experience needed, just an interest in making by hand.
