About this Event
On May 19th, we present : "Climate Change, Law, and the Limits of Global Cooperation" by Prof. Jutta Brunnée
Climate change is a global problem—but the world is made up of sovereign states. So how do you create laws that everyone actually follows?
In this lecture, Prof Brunnée explores how international law attempts to coordinate climate action across more than 190 independent countries—each with its own priorities, politics, and constraints. From broad, unwritten norms of customary law to complex international treaties, these legal tools are designed to guide collective action—but only with the consent of the states involved.
You’ll get a clear, accessible look at how international climate law has evolved, the challenges of making binding agreements in a fragmented world, and why enforcement is often more complicated than it seems. The talk also examines the growing role of international courts and tribunals in pushing climate action forward.
Finally, it considers what recent shifts in the global order—highlighted by Mark Carney at the World Economic Forum—might mean for the future of climate cooperation.
