3-day butoh workshop with Japanese butoh duo MutsumiNeiro
About this Event

Please note this is a 3-day workshop. The schedule is:

Fri 13 December: 6pm - 9pm
Sat 14 December: 11am - 5pm (including lunch break)
Sun 15 December: 11am - 5pm (including lunch break)

Workshop theme:

BUTOH is to encounter the unrevealed world by revealing oneself. Starting with awe, shivering, it turns into a great feeling. To be taken off your guard, fully open, and throw yourself precisely into the most thrilling yet unspecial moment. It is about entering, and when you are entering you are leaving. A flower is blooming, even as it is dying. Never stop blooming.

Each workshop is a once in a lifetime experience. Based on what we learnt from our master Yoshito Ohno (1938-2020), the most important thing is for us to make difference in dance is to GIVE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE. Dance is born and vanishes in a single moment. We give all of our life into every little moment. Tatsumi Hijikata (1928-1986) said "I am more afraid of one transformation than a thousand changes". Even if you have great philosophy, techniques and experience, if you don't give everything you have into dance, you cannot encounter unrevealed possibilities. Only when you give everything, will a transformation appear. The dancer becomes a monster - a bakemono in Japanese. Here is where BUTOH begins.

Through careful and precise experience, we throw ourselves into LOVE METAMORPHOSIS IMRPOVISATION.

Dance is part of Cosmic Genesis, like a child licks and kicks a stone.

MUTSUMINEIRO

https://www.mutsumineiro.com/

Japanese butoh duo comprised of Neiro and Mutsumi Yamamoto. They have been dancing together since 2012, after meeting at the Kazuo Ohno Dance Studio. Their first duo performance was Tonight or Never..., which toured around Japan, Poland, Israel and Germany. In 2016 they opened their studio Galerie ame in Tokyo. Their most recent performance is Pink River.

Born in Ehime (southwest Japan), Mutsumi started classical ballet at the age of 3, which she stopped after an injury during her studies at the Tokyo Womens College of Physical Education. She took up dancing again 10 years later, after an accidental encounter with Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno's dance. She then moved to Tokyo in 2009 to study long term with Yoshito Ohno, and has since performed several solos, duets, and group performances across Japan and abroad. She has also studied and performed with Mitsuyo Uesugi (who performed in Rebellious Bodies in 2023), and was chosen to model for Yuriko Takagi's photo book Issey Miyake.

Neiro studied Art Mime at JIDAI, and butoh with Yoshito Ohno. From 2010-2012 he listed in Warsaw, Poland, where he performed in Mime Art Theater directed by Stefan NiedziaƂkowski. In addition to his work with Mutsumi, he has performed duets with other dancers such as Seiji Tanaka, and he performed his first solo Bokutoh KI - Dance TANTAN at Theater X in Tokyo in 2020.
