Listening Session on the Artistry of Palghat Raghu

Guided by Anantha R. Krishnan & Abhishek Raghuraman

This event makes available to lovers of Indian music some of the priceless archival recordings of great masters from the archives of NCPA.

Born in Mynmar, mridangam maestro Palghat Raghu (1928-2009) was initially trained by T. Venkatarama Iyer and T. Raghava Iyer. Later on, he was mentored by the mridangam maestro Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer. Having toured extensively in India and overseas, he provided accompaniment to several eminent artistes including Hindustani instrumentalists. He was also involved in east-west fusion music. A recipient of several prestigious awards, Palghat Raghu was a visiting professor of music at some Universities in USA.

Anantha R. Krishnan and Abhishek Raghuraman are grandsons of maestro Palghat Raghu.

Both had the privilege of training under him. Anantha, also a student of tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, has been providing mridangam accompaniment as well as participates in cross-cultural ensembles. With a ‘Masters of Fine Arts’ in Electronic Music and Percussion, presently he serves as faculty of percussion at K.M. Music Conservatory in Chennai.

Starting off as a mridangam player under the tutelage of his grandfather, Abhishek Raghuraman chose to be a vocalist in Carnatic music. Initiated by his mother, he went on to train with maestro P. S. Narayanaswami. He also credits mandolin maestro U. Srinivas to have greatly influenced his sense of music. An ‘A’ grade artiste of All India Radio, Abhishek has to his credit many successful performances, awards and accolades.

The session will feature selected audio and video excerpts of Palghat Raghu’s recordings specially made at the NCPA during 1987-88 and master classes conducted during 1989.
